Robertson Unit-Re:generation
In January, 2025, Steps Recovery launched the Re:generation program in its entirety to the newly rotated Faith Based Dorm (FBD) at the French-Robertson Unit. This was a 43-week project and took 9 months to complete due to mandatory lock-downs, and other security situations that prevented our team to go in on certain weeks. We did this with 6 volunteers who committed to come in every Saturday morning at 6 AM until 8:30 AM. We start the class off with 2 songs of worship, followed by a large group lesson, then break up into small groups to discuss that week’s lessons in our book. The volunteers are men who have come through the Re:generation program at Steps Recovery Center and have decided to get the proper training to take it inside the prison walls. We are confident that this will change the atmosphere inside TDCJ. This will be an on-going class that will restart every year when the Faith Based Dorm rotates.
In September 2026, the Lord opened the door for us to launch the Re:generation program into the general population at Robertson! We are utilizing 5 of the inmates who completed the Re:generation program in the Faith Based Dorm to help facilitate the small groups. We are able to do this in the Chapel on Wednesday’s from 12 PM-3 PM. The class dynamics are exactly the same as we did in Faith Based Dorm. This will be a reoccurring class!
Middleton Unit
The material that we run at Steps Recovery Center is Re:generation. The Re:generation program is designed in 2 modules; Groundwork & 12-Step Study.
The first module (Groundwork) is the only module we have enough time to offer the Middleton Unit. This module is a 12 week class, walking us through areas of our lives that help us to examine ourselves, and gives biblical examples of how to make adjustments, preparing us for a deeper relationship with Jesus. Each week is structured around the daily curriculum the participants are issued. The classes are broken down into small groups who interact in discussing their work in the book that week. In 2024, we launched 12 weeks of Groundwork material into the Middleton Unit to the general population (GP).In 2025 we ran the12 week Groundwork material again, this time putting it into the Faith Based Dorm (FBD) as part of the Faith Based Program. With the Middleton Unit being a transfer unit, we found that this program is better fit to be run in the FBD for several reasons.
Our Steps Prison Team is also facilitating other classes in the FBD program such as;
Forgiveness- This is a 12 week class based on Rodney Houge’s book “Forgiveness”.
Choices- This is based on materials brought together by Sherrie Saltzgaber & Jeff Smith at Beltway Park Church in Abilene, Texas.
Quest for Authentic Manhood- A module from the Men’s Fraternity series, a Christian men’s discipleship curriculum created by Dr. Robert Lewis at Fellowship Bible Church in Little Rock, Arkansas.
Voyager- This is an Individual Treatment Plan (ITP) class that is required by TDCJ. The TDCJ- (ITP) is a personalized plan outlining an inmate’s required programs and services to support rehabilitation, reduce recidivism, and guide parole consideration.
Overcomers Class- This is another ITP class.
Anger Management- This is another ITP class.
Worship
Central to ALL our areas of service is WORSHIP. Our classes keep JESUS in the center of all the curriculum we offer. Getting your heart and head in the right space is important for learning and change to take place.
